Up Til Dawn : The personal battles of four Indiana State University students against cancer served as the spark for students, faculty and staff to step up to the plate and do what they could -- raise money for research and a cure.

The Sycamore effort raised $20,537 in its first year of participating in Up 'til Dawn, a national fundraising program to give students the opportunity to help the children and families of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital while also having fun. More than 250 colleges and universities now participate in Up 'til Dawn, which began in 1998. To date, the program has raised more than $16.5 million for St. Jude.

Indiana State's Up 'til Dawn began last spring with an information meeting with Susie Tatum, a St Jude Children's Research Hospital representative. Over the summer, three students traveled to St. Jude and attended a workshop designed to educate students on what goes on at Jude everyday and to give ideas on how to raise money for the hospital.

Korean Fashion Show : A delegation from Sungshin Women’s University of Seoul, South Korea, brought their world-traveled Authentic Korean Fashion Show to Terre Haute on March 25, in Dede I of Indiana State University’s Hulman Memorial Student Union.

Students from Sungshin and Indiana State universities modeled traditional Korean garments, as well as more modern fashions inspired by the ancient culture’s traditions.

The delegation was brought to ISU and the Terre Haute community by the Office of the President through the university’s connection to the International Association of University Presidents, or IAUP.

“I would like to thank Dr. Al Romo and the IAUP for making this opportunity available to ISU and our community. I think it is wonderful that Indiana State’s presence in global higher education can lead to our selection for this kind of cultural experience,” said Lloyd W. Benjamin III, president of Indiana State. Romo is the secretary-general of the IAUP.

ISU’s International Affairs Center is assisting with hosting the delegation, and production assistance for the fashion show is being provided by Hulman Center.

“We live in a globalized world and need to have a better sense of what other cultures are like,” said Michael Chambers, International Affairs Center interim executive director. “This fashion show creates an opportunity for our students and the community at large to interact with another culture.”

ISU students majoring in textiles, apparel and merchandising, and students from the Fashion Merchandising Association are working backstage to gain experience producing and executing a show of this magnitude.

Previous to coming to Terre Haute, the delegation will present its fashion show at the University of New Mexico, and will continue on from Indiana State to Chicago and then Yale University.

While at ISU, Sungshin President Shim Hwa Jin, who is leading the 35-member delegation, and President Benjamin will sign a memorandum of understanding on March 24 at Condit House.

“The memorandum will be a one-year agreement to discuss ways the two universities can pursue cooperation,” Chambers said. “We would like to consider mechanisms such as faculty exchanges, student exchanges, joint research projects, joint conferences and joint cultural programs as ways to pursue this cooperation.”

Teacher of Tomorrow- Spring 2008 : Holli Pickett listened intently as she moved from station to station within Indiana State University’s Cunningham Memorial Library listening as the librarians described the databases available to students.

For the Bedford North Lawrence High School senior, it is part of the decision process on where she wants to attend college to become a math teacher.

“I wanted to learn more about the department of education,” she said about visiting ISU as part of the Teachers of Tomorrow program on Tuesday (March 25).

The program is a way for high school students, who are interested in becoming teachers, to learn more about what it would take to put them in a classroom, and how ISU’s College of Education is prepared to help get them there.

“This event provides prospective new students with first-hand insight into the curriculum, the courses, the faculty and the field of education,” said Rich Toomey, ISU director of admissions. “As prospective teachers, this program will provide both an opportunity to experience the profession that is teaching as well as engage with university faculty in a direct and personal way.”

Almost 90 high school students and parents attended the day, which included a discussion session on what the future teachers would need to do and classes they would need to take as well as an attendance at an education class.

Douglas is a legendary figure in law enforcement and the model for the Scott Glenn character in "The Silence of the Lambs." (He was also the original choice to play the role.) As founder and chief of the FBI’s Investigative Support Unit - the team that tackles the most baffling and senseless of unsolved violent crimes - Douglas is the man who ushered in a new age in behavioral science and criminal profiling. He retired from the FBI after 25 years of service.

2008 Sycamore Community Leadership : INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana State University and the Indiana Lieutenant Governor’s Office recognized six high schools around the state today for their community service work.

Crawfordsville High School and students in Helen Hudson’s Honors English class were named inaugural recipients of the Sycamore Community Leadership Award, a new program to recognize high schools that demonstrate a commitment to community engagement.

Indiana State University President Lloyd W. Benjamin III said the award represents the commitment to service found on the university’s campus.

“At Indiana State, we believe that community engagement and service to others is a critical component of our students' education, one that will stay with them throughout their lives,” Benjamin said. “The students we are recognizing with this award are already making a difference in our world."

In 2005, Hudson’s students initiated a project to renovate the Crawfordsville Amtrak Station, a facility dubbed by passengers as Amtrak’s “Worst Stop of 2003.” During its first year, more than 40 students cleaned the station, removed more than 50 bags of trash, and started renovations. But that was only the beginning.

In April 2006, a small group of students spoke at the National Association of Rail Passengers conference, lobbied the Indiana Congressional delegation while in Washington D.C., and spoke to officials from the Department of the Interior, Federal Railroad Administration, and Department of Transportation.

During the 2006-07 school year, with the station refurbished, the students decided to turn their efforts to the state level. The students appeared before the Crawfordsville Board of Public Works to ask for more lighting for the station, attended legislative breakfasts, continued physical improvement of the station, met with Purdue University engineers, train officials and Lafayette city officials and presented their work at the Governor’s Conference on Service Learning and Volunteerism.

“We’re fortunate to have him,” Mark Hamm, professor in the department of criminology and criminal justice, said. “He’s part of history.”

Kaczynski turned in his brother after noticing similarities between the Unabomber’s Manifesto and letters his brother sent him. The Unabomber had killed three and wounded 23 people by sending bombs to universities and airlines.

“Ted Kaczynski is one of the major figures in the history of 20th Century terrorism,” Hamm said. “It is important to look at all aspects of terrorism and mental illness is one of those aspects.”

David Kaczynski spoke on “The Death Penalty: Mental Illness and The Unabomber” at 2:15 p.m. in Holmstedt Hall, Room 103. He is the executive director of New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty.

Speaker discusses bank failures : The savings and loan crisis of the 1980s and '90s cost an estimated $150 billion. Legislation passed in 1991 was intended to reduce the cost of bank failures, but George Kaufman, the John M. Smith professor of finance and economics at Loyola University in Chicago, says the potential costs are still too high. In his presentation for the College of Business at ISU, Kaufman discussed his ideas for further policy changes so that the cost of bank failures is as low as possible and that the largest institutions will not gamble that regulators will bail them out if they become insolvent.

Kaufman, who is director of the Center for Financial and Policy Studies in the School of Business at Loyola, spoke at 5 p.m. Oct. 8 in the ISU College of Business, 11th floor conference room.

Monterey Bay Cruise on the Atlantis with Tony Rathburn : An oceanographic research expedition, which launched Sunday (July 22) from San Francisco, is aimed at better understanding the links between seafloor ecology and geologic records of past climate changes while providing hands-on experience for future scientists who may be called upon to address global warming.

The project, funded by the National Science Foundation, involves researchers and students from six institutions, including Indiana State University, the University of Florida and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The expedition examined methane seeps 1,000 meters below sea level in Monterey Bay. Such seeps, where cold methane escapes from undersea sediment, provide a significant source of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere and may be responsible for some of the major changes in past climates, researchers say.

Methane seeps also are important because they provide oases for seafloor communities that exist nowhere else. Although the hydrogen sulfide and methane produced by seeps can be toxic to most creatures, seeps provide habitats for a variety of organisms, some of which depend upon the seep’s unique chemistry and symbiotic microbes to survive.

Governors Reception : INDIANAPOLIS - Racing executives from the United Kingdom and other countries learned more about business opportunities in Indiana as well as the industry-oriented education provided by Indiana State
University during an event Wednesday (May 23) at the Indiana governor’s residence.

“There is no place where people know and love racing more than Indiana,” Gov. Mitch Daniels told dozens of business leaders.

“There is a shop in every small town in Indiana that can do excellent work to your standards and you will find an educational system - Indiana State being emblematic - that is excited about producing people. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service : ISU was one of hundreds of projects and thousands of volunteers across the country who honored Dr. King's legacy of working to solve social problems through serving others on Monday, Jan 15, 2007. Volunteers were matched with selected local non-profit agencies such as the 14th and Chestnut Community Center, Ryves Youth Center, Terre Haute Children’s Museum, and the Lighthouse Mission. The event is held in conjunction with his holiday to honor the dream. Dr. King knew what makes a great American - it doesn’t matter if you’re young or old or where you live. Doesn’t matter how busy you are. All that matters is what you do for others.

This event is sponsored by the ISU Center for Public Service and Community Engagement and Sycamore Service Corps.

Terre Haute Innovation Alliance : TERRE HAUTE -- The Terre Haute Innovation Alliance, a new economic development and education initiative, is already beginning to pay dividends, local officials said today (April 17) in announcing its creation.

The partnership between the city of Terre Haute, the Terre Haute Economic Development Corporation, Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has started providing services to three companies in the process of developing or expanding their products while engaging students in hands-on projects and creating jobs for the local economy, said Steve Witt, President of the Terre Haute Economic Development Corp.

The creation of the Terre Haute Innovation Alliance was announced today in conjunction with the Indiana Humanities Council Regional Forum at Indiana State University. The partnership was started with $500,000 in federal support garnered with assistance from Indiana Senators Evan Bayh and Sen. Richard Lugar.

“This partnership will help new businesses create innovative technologies and prepare students for a new emerging economy. The Innovation Alliance will be instrumental in developing business growth in the life sciences, which is a high priority for the state of Indiana,” said Gerald Jakubowski, president of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The three companies involved -- DesAcc, InfraWare and Novus Technologies -- are all technical in nature with two providing applications and services for the health care industry. All three companies will be utilizing space within ISU’s John T. Myers Technology Center for a portion of their operations. Two of the companies have and will continue to benefit from the services provided by project managers and students at Rose-Hulman Ventures.

In addition to physical space for their product development, the companies selected to participate also receive business development funding as well as services from students and faculty at the two higher education institutions. Providing career-related experiences for students and actively engaging them in the companies’ projects may help retain them in the community after they graduate, said Kevin Burke, mayor of Terre Haute.

Nancy Grace - Speakers Series : Legal Analyst Nancy Grace visited Indiana State University on Tuesday, Feb. 21, and addressed a sizeable crowd gathered in Tilson Auditorium. The visit was part of ISU's Speaker's Series.

Grace joined Court TV from the Atlanta Fulton County District Attorney's Office where she served for a decade as special prosecutor of major felony cases involving serial murder, serial rape, serial child molestation and arson. Grace compiled a perfect record of nearly 100 felony convictions at trial and no losses.

One of television’s most respected legal analysts, Grace hosts Court TV’s trial coverage program “Nancy Grace: Closing Arguments” in addition to a series of Court TV live primetime news specials. She also hosts a nightly show on CNN Headline News. Her first book, “Objection!,” takes a look at America’s justice system that focuses on high profile and celebrity defendants and what really happens in the courtroom.

Grace, a Law Review graduate of Mercer Law School, received her degree in constitutional and criminal law from New York University. She was also a litigation instructor at Georgia State University School of Law and a business law instructor at GSU's School of Business. Grace clerked with a federal court judge and practiced antitrust and consumer protection law with the Federal Trade Commission.

A lover of Shakespearean literature, Grace’s plan to become an English professor was derailed by the random murder of her fiancé. The incident propelled her to enroll in law school and set her on the path to become a felony prosecutor and an outspoken victims’ rights advocate.
